Gilardino fell down in a funny manner
Artur Boruc keeps on going in the series of European games at Celtic Park without letting one goal in. It’s been 450 minutes since he’s lost a goal at his pitch. - I can let something in, in the return match -says the best footballer of the Tuesdays game against Milan. - As long as we play in the quarter-final.
Przegląd Sportowy: Congratulations on another good performance in the Champions League and keeping a clan record at Celtic Park. Also best birthday wishes (Artur has turned 27 that day) and…where’s the party?
Artur Boruc: Thank you very much. The party will be rather quiet, I am going home
Now, after the game, are you aware of against whom you have played? You know how Gilardino takes a shot and how Pirlo and Kaka play.
- That’s true. Kaka has impressed me today, he’s a magnificent player. He plays phenomenally and it shows in his every move. Other than that? The score’s 0:0. Everything is open. We’ll see what happens in San Siro
How did the one on one situation with Gilardino look from your perspective? As usual you have waited until the end for what he’d do. And you have defended.
- The ball went on my slightly swollen knee (laughter). I have some knee problems recently, so their surface tends to become a little larger (laughter). It did not befit to throw myself too soon because that would have made the case extremely easy for Gilardino. It’s a matter of a moment. There are several situations when I throw myself sooner. This one required me to wait a bit longer.
Giraldino fell down on the penalty field and was trying to coerce an eleven. You tried te best you could not to get in his way or not to get in contact with him. Has the thought of the Old Trafford game come to your mind that moment, when Giggs’ used your presence and managed to get a penalty shot?
- I don’t think it has. There was no time to try and remember that. I have more focused on shouting at Giraldino. To tell you the truth it looked hilarious when he threw himself on the lawn a couple of meters behind me, the moment he realised he would not be able to catch up the ball. That was the funniest part.
You have shouted at Darren O’Dea several times today. I suppose you shouted the loudest in the most dangerous situation when you were face to face with Gilardio, after Kaka’s passed him the ball. Still seconds later you taped him on the shoulder. Did you act like a teacher? First you reprimand him but then you comforted him so he would not feel down?
- He’s a young boy who’s just started to gain his experience and its good that we have kept a clear record and O’Dea has not maid so many gross mistakes. In that particular situation I got a bit nervous. Our coach told us not to try to be arbiters on the pitch and not to coerce anything on them. He’s raised his hand after Kaka passed the ball and tired to signalize that there was an off-side. I got a little irritated by that. Still a moment later everything was all right, we had no problems anymore and I think that thanks to my reaction he managed to pull himself together I hope.
There was no big stage fright in such game, was there?
- The heart beats faster and obviously the presence of the public, the atmosphere and the noise made by the crowd gives you a pleasant feeling. It’s really nice whet sixty thousand people “roars” and cheers you, I would not like to repeat myself but it’s just a game like any other.
Did you expect that Milan would cause you more trouble? You’ve defended four dangerous shots but in general you had a rather calm night...
- Until a certain point (laughter)...
Which of the games has been harder for you then? The one at Pittodrie against Aberdeen or the one today? You had to defend a similar number of shots in the Weekend as today.
- Maybe. Today the main difficulty was that in was the Champions League. Each mistake can cost you a goal which means that your main target is becoming more distant. It’s rather different in the Scottish league. Not every mistake puts you at such risk. It’s good that there weren’t that many mistakes today.
So 0:0 at San Siro, a play-off and the penalties?
- I’d rather have a 1:1 tie, even if it meant I’d have to let one goal in. It’s mainly the promotion. I’d be nice to score as the first team and then worry about playing clean at the back.
But you are aware the fact that in 12 European games Celtic has only had one tie? You’ve lost the other games. You are a totally different team outside Glasgow.
- I keep on deceiving myself that this will finally change. My back started to hurt when I had to take the ball out of the goal for three times during every away game. I am a little fed up with it. We are going away to get promoted. Either after a tie or after a victory. I hope it will be all right.
