I am not getting divorced (28.12.06)
The media are full of information about Artur Boruc’s marriage falling apart. Still our goalie denies these revelations. “It’s complete rubbish, made up by the journalists. Our relationship is fine and we are not getting a divorce” - Artur assures DZIENNIK.
Dziennik: Your press in Scotland is not too good is it?
Artur Boruc: Why? I barely have any contact with their journalists. I am obliged to give an interview once a moth and that’s it. I have never received a phone call from any of the Scottish journalists. That’s not a practice here.
They don’t call you, but they do observe you. You have become a part of a moral scandal. Is this true that you have left your wife for Joanne McQuillan?
- That’s nonsense. They have made it up, because Kasia went back to Poland for Christmas and they had to invent a story for it. Our marriage is fine and we are not getting a divorce. I am going to sue the newspaper, which published these revelations.
You could say that the year 2006 was the most successful in your career...
- You think that? Which game are you talking about? What happened? Only joking. It was not bad, but I have never thought of it in a way “What a fantastic year that was!”. I played at munidal. I have won the Championship of Scotland and got promoted to the 1/8 of the Champions League finals. It’s no big deal. I am only doing my job right. It could have been better. Our mundial was a total disaster. I have not watched the recordings. I don’t want to torture myself. I’m not getting excited. I do like my job, but it does not bring much emotion to me
Boruc raises a lot of emotion in other people. Especially in the Glasgow Rangers fans. During the last derby you have again crossed yourself ostentatiously and caused a wave of protest.
- It was not ostentatious. I have simply crossed myself. I always do it before going out onto the pitch and I will continue doing it.
The Scottish claim that you have deliberately crossed yourself in front of the Rangers fans and not Celtic.
- I did it once in front of the Celtic’s tribune and when we switched sides, in front of the Rangers’. I was not provoking anybody. I don’t care that they file complains to the police against me. They can’t lock me up in jail for making the sign of the cross. It’s Great Britain not some burg.
You have to admit that you are a controversial figure not only in Scotland. They also hate you in Śląsk after what you have said about the cheer on Chorzów’s stadium...
- I am expressive and I say what I think out loud, therefore I’m controversial. Śląsk has crossed the line when they whistled at the National team and I have only judged it.
You are very attached to the team colours, you have a fan’s mentality in a way...
- Not only in a way. I am a huge fan of Legia Warsaw.
How does this connect with your “average interest in football”?
- Both things are true. I always have to watch the game when Legia is playing. I like to watch championships or the Champions League, but to a certain extent. I’m not a football maniac. I practice, I play, that’s it. I don’t live football afterwards.
According to some coaches your biggest disadvantage is your weak psyche. You are unable to remain concentrated throughout the whole game.
- That’s interesting. I completely disagree.
What about the terrible kick-offs during the game against Belgium in Brussels?
- Oh sure, that is a big problem. I am sorry, did something happen? Did I miss a goal or did we loose the game? A bad kick is something that happens to footballers, and that’s it. I saw what Iker Casillas did in one of the last league games of Real Madrid. I did not hear anybody say he had a problem with his psyche or that he was a weak goalie.
Neil Lennon, your team mate, said about you in the Scottish media that Boruc is the best goalie in Europe...
- Well… if he says so, I am not going to argue with him.
Your manager, Radosław Osuch, announced that if you leave Celtic it will only be for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or MU.
- Stop, stop, stop. Radosław Osuch has not been my manager for several months now. I don’t know why he claims he is. He will not participate in any costs of my potential transfer. Do write it clearly: Artur Boruc is his own manager.
Are you joking? You are going to attend the transfer meetings and negotiate your own contact?
- What’s so difficult about that? I don’t see a problem.
Have you got any experience on that field?
- I’d say I have much. I once went to a market place in Turkey and I had to bargain for everything I bought. I know how to handle it.
Don’t you think that selling a footballer is not quite the same thing as selling goods on a market?
- I think it is exactly the same.
How is it going to be with the transfer to Arsenal then?
- Why Arsenal? I am not willing to go anywhere for the present. I’m good in Glasgow. Time showed I was right, when I did not leave for London. It turned out that money is not everything. I can go far with Celtic in Champions League.
Milan awaits you in the next round. Aren’t your legs shacking?
- My whole body is shacking and there are still two months to that game. I’m obviously joking. Milan is Milan. There are no weak teams in the Champions League left. All the teams have a similar force now.
Do you like Scotland?
- Very much, especially because more and more Poles come here. We are everywhere. Poles work in every bank, shop, restaurant. I’m very happy about it, because there is always someone you can talk to, plus we are being greatly appreciated here. We know how to work well.
You were playing during the whole holidays. Doesn’t it bother you?
- We were playing on the 23rd and the 26th of December. We are also playing on the 30th of December and the 2nd of January. I think it’s all right. Last year I had to get out of bed at 7 am on the 1st of January and go to the game in Edinburgh. I am not complaining. That’s what I am being paid for.
Aren’t you going to drink a glass of Champaign?
- No. The professional footballers do not drink. They are well behaved and put themselves to bed early. They are really good boys.
Why are you laughing?
- Because I am in a good mood.
