I am there to return the ball (5.12.)

This was a top world level intervention - said Gordon Strachan, about Artur Boruc’s intervention thanks to which The Bhoys defeated Aberdeen 1:0. The winning goal was scored by Maciej Żurawski.

The Polish magic brings Celtic victory - wrote the Scottish papers. Żurawski was benched and entered the pitch in the 67 minute. 5 minutes later he scored. It was his first goal since 21st of October.

Boruc was the hero of that game. He defended Russell Anderson’s shot in the 90 minute. Aberdeen’s captain was just 8 meters away.

We scored a few times in the last minutes of the game during this season. It would have been the same this time if it wasn’t for Boruc. - said Aberdeen’s coach Jimmy Calderwood.

English and Scottish papers described Boruc’s intervention as "amazing, incredible, brilliant, astounding". These are just some adjectives used.

Gazeta Wyborcza: Your brilliant intervention in the 90 th minute of the game saved Celtic’s victory on Saturday.

Artur Boruc: I am there to return the ball. I defended what I could defend.

The league game against Aberdeen was also important for Maciej Żurawski.

- He did score a winning goal. He’s a good forward, able to determine the game. I sure hope he’ll manage to convince our coach that he deserves to play. It’s the coach who decides who’ll play and who won’t.

Is there a big gap between the Scottish league and the Champions League? Is it hard to pull yourself together for the duel with Kilmarnock after defeating MU?

- No. It’s not true that only three teams mean something in the Scottish league. We do win when we play at home, but unbelievable things happen on tours. Everyone wants to kick out asses, there is a huge lot of aggression. There is no way we can let go of anything. The skills might not be the same in comparison with Champions League but the engagement is enormous.

After you’ve won with MU and got promoted in Champions League for the first time, a Scottish journalist said: "If Artur is broke in 30 years time and has no idea what to do with his life, he should come to Glasgow. The fans won’t let him starve."

- That’s nice. Such words do bring joy, because the reason for becoming a footballer is the fact that you want to be appreciated. Especially outside your home land. We’ll see what happens in 30 years, but I think I will always have an idea what to do with my life. I sure hope I won’t ever go broke.

These weeks were quite peculiar for you.

- My cousin died some time ago. Not so long ago - her father, my uncle, who was the greatest, most positive character in my family. I had some break downs and football helped me forget about all this for a while. The funeral took place a day after the game against Manchester.

The way you played was phenomenal. You defended the penalty shot in 89 minute. Celtic won 1:0.

- There is nothing to recall…

...I think there is.

- It was a good game. It’s games like this that make you love football. Its magic, its unpredictability, and the fact that the better team not always wins. It’s extremely important to the Scottish, because playing against England is more than just sports to them.

Your first thought after defending the penalty?

- That it’s not over yet and I still need to concentrate.

You have sensed it perfectly and went the right way.

- This happens. A Goalkeeper needs luck, and I had it. I remembered how the French scored a penalty in the first game, the one which was lost 2:3, and I went that way. He got me.

And when you heard the last whistle...

- I went crazy fore a second. It hit me that what we’ve done was incredible. I wanted to run towards our supporters and enjoy it with them. It’s them who we play for. I crossed the banner but the police stopped me.

Will you get a ticket?

- This I do not know, but I sure will in 6 months. I think it was all about my safety though.

Defeating MU must have had a specific taste to it?

- It sure did. It gave us a promotion. Still, I think we will have a chance to play even greater teams. We must take the game with Kopenhagen seriously. We mustn’t disregard them, we have to win and get promoted from the first spot.

The Scottish wrote : „King Arthur”. Celtic’s rates went up by 14% after the game with MU. Can the players feel that?

- I don’t read newspapers, but I have seen some headlines. I can’t talk about money. Don’t think we ca actually feel that we got promoted to the 1/16 of the Champions League finals.

1/8 finals actually.

- Oh. Bonuses will be paid out after the group-faze ends. I don’t think anyone suffers from that in Celtic.

Do you often defend the penalties?

- On training sessions?

No, during the games.

- It happens. I think I’ve defended 4 during the last season. I don’t run any personal statistics though.

Do you ever think about changing the club?

- I’m good in Glasgow. We are still in Champions League, we might win the Scottish Championship... I don’t think about all this. I’ wait and see what happens.

You repeatedly said you had no interest for sports, but about what happened in Japan...

- I know about it, I heard about it, I watched it. I’ve got Polsat channel and I’m absolutely impressed by the guys. I would sincerely like to congratulate our volleyball players.

It seems that the foreign scholars working with Polish athletes have the ability of turning into success everything they touch. A Dutchman coaches the football team, Argentinean - the volleyball team, Slovenian - the basketball team, Belarusian and a Ukrainian coach the gold medallists in footrace and biathlon and finally Małysz works with a Finn coach. What is this all about?

- The old saying "you don't know how good you have it" gains a new meaning. The case with foreigners is that we want to believe them to the maximum, because we think there are free from the strings attached to our compatriots. We are extremely lucky that the best people in business want to work with us. A foreign coach is able to give us the self-esteem and the belief that we really can do it. He doesn’t have any complexes, therefore we don’t have any.
