I am very happy (28.11.)
From all the Celtic players coming out from the cloakroom after the game, it was the Polish goalkeeper who got the biggest applaud.
Boruc looked as if he was stunned with what was going on around him.
Przegląd Sportowy: This was an amazing game. You have impressed everyone with great calm and self confidence from the very start. When Luis Saha was heading forward the eleven, one could just feel that you’d defend it.
Artur Boruc: I am most happy about being able to mellow out after what has happened.
You’re saying you’ve managed to mellow out. What happened?
- The past two months have brought two bitter events in my family, but I don’t want to talk about it. My psychologist gave me the biggest support and I highly doubt that I would be able to cope with all this without him. We talked before every game. I also did the couple of things I do coming out of the cloakroom that help me to prepare myself psychically. I am really glad about the game against Manchester, even though some may say I had one lopsided kick-off…
Even the kick-offs were good.
- I think two of them were different from what they should have been. Anyway, we are in the next round and I am happy about it.
Did you know that you have fought out a promotion to the next round, while you were defending the penalty kick?
- I got to know it after the game, under the shower. Neil Lennopn came running to the cloakroom with the news. After the last whistle I only thought we’ve defeated Manchester and that’s it. I thought that we would still have to wait for the promotion.
You talked about being prepared psychically, but this game showed that a good performance does not only depend on the attitude but also on pure goal-keeping “know-how”. Lets take for instance the situation where you were face to face with Cristiano Ronaldo in the first half. Did you wait until the last moment for his action? You did not move before his shot.
-It is a matter of a moment really. It is hard for me to say now, if I really wanted to wait. That was the decision I have made. Maybe that was the matter of instinct. The result was he hit my leg.
What about when everybody stopped, thinking that Saha was at the offside , and you managed to defend his shot with your hand even though you were sitting on the lawn?
- Everybody stopped at first, but then came the consternation when it turned out that the assistant arbiter did not put his flag up. I raised my hands to signalize the offside…Just kidding. Of course I wanted to defend the shot regardless of the whistle.
And what about the penalty kick. Did you choose the corner or did you wait?
- I remembered that during the last game with Manchester Saha was aiming to that corner , so I thought he might try to shoot it the same way...
Did it spring to your head jus before the shot?
- I remember I was watching television on the day of the game and the replays from the shots from the past rounds of the Champions League. They also showed that one. I think justice has been done. I continuously think that I did not foul Giggs in Manchester and there was no penalty kick.
Didn’t you consider doing something similar to the Dudek-dance?
- No, my name is Artur Boruc. I never thought about whether or not such a dance could help with anything. I have never tried that and I highly doubt I ever will.
Did you manage to defend a penalty kick while playing for the national team?
- The one with the United States as far as I remember?
You also defended these in the last season. You stopped the Falkirk players twice, who also you did not manage to beat you in the elevens contest in the League Cup.
- Yes, I remember that, but I wouldn’t call myself a penalty-kick specialist. It’s good that they can’t score, that I manage to throw myself in the right way.
