Boruc: I’m good here (4.11)

After the World Cup finals ended it was almost certain that Artur Boruc has earned his place as the first goalkeeper of the national team. Meanwhile, after just a few weeks, the new coach, Leo Beenhaker, has placed him on third on his list. Later on Boruc managed to climb up to the second position, and after the game with Belgium he might become the new number one.

Piłka Nożna: What happened after the World Cup that your record in the national team dropped?

Artur Boruc: Nothing. It might have been for my injury. Still, even if it was not for the back problems, Leo Beenhaker would have probably made the same decision about who to put in the goal-post. I have to admit it is not the way I imagined my post-mundial future would look like, but wise people always say, that there is nothing we can be sure of when it comes to football. Sport teaches us humility and I am the best example for it.

You must be glad then that Wojtek Kowalewski will not be allowed to play against Belgium, due to the yellow cards?

- I have never thought of Wojtek being sent off in these categories. I know that this is an opportunity for me to get back in the game and I will try to make the best I can out of it. That’s all.

Did you happen to read Dudek’s confessing how satisfied he was that Kowalewski has won the competition, which was going on between you two, for the tricot with number one on it?

- I did not. I am also not going to comment on what Jurek said. Dudek is a grown man, therefore he has a right to think and speak whatever he wants. I am not obliged to care about that.

Right? So you also did not care that Beenhaker benched you?

- It did hurt me that our present coach has a different point of view to the previous one. Still I am not a type of man who would cry into anyone’s sleeve. I do have the ambition to play it the first lineup of the Polish national team.

Did you experience a deja vu from Legia, when you were made a reserve player for Kowalewski?

- Yes, but only for a moment though. You can not compare the present situation with the one from a few years ago. Wojtek was an acknowledged goalkeeper in Poland, and I was the one who was totally unknown, who came to Legia out of nowhere. At that time the bench did not burn my bottom while watching Gibon, but now it sure does.

What you have said about Dudek once was that he was no more than your work colleague. Do you keep Kowalewski at the same distance?

- No. We used to be really good friends when we played in Legia. We did not lose contact. I can not think of a thing that could tear us apart. That even includes me having to stare at Wojtek’s back on the national team in the future.

Do you consider yourself a good man?

- I do not know that. I’d rather have others judge me in the future. I do not think it is right to judge oneself. Why did you ask?

Due to you being involved in the works of the „Making the dreams come true” foundation. It does not look like a part of a PR strategy, but as an honest wish to bring joy to the ill children.

- Let’s not make a fuss about it. I paid a visit to a boy who suffers from brain cancer. Last week I went to see Rafał, who’s also been wronged by fate.

Did you have apprehension that you could not be up to it?

- Restrains are normal when we face such extraordinary situations, because no one has the ability of predicting how it will all end. Still the very moment you enter their homes, all the barriers disappear, because these boys are simply magnificent. They have so much energy and an incredible lust for life. After both of the meetings I was charged with positive energy. They also gave me the awareness that we should cherish every happy moment of our life.

While leaving, did you also have the feeling that you were a better man that before?

- No. I did have a curious frame of mind, though. It would have been different if I would not have decided to take part in such meetings. I felt relieved.

You are a deeply believing Catholic. Are you a church-goer?

- This sure is an interesting set of questions you have prepared.

Thank you, I would therefore appreciate honest answers.

- I am and I am not ashamed of it. I always attend a Holy Mass if only I do not have to play a game on Sunday.

So your religiosity is not limited to making the sign of the cross right before the game against Glasgow Rangers, who’s fans are almost a hundred percent protestant?

- God forbid! I did the same thing before every game back in Poland. It did not bother anyone. To tell you the truth it was The Scotch fans who made “Boruc’s religiosity” such a big problem and unfairly accused me of being a provocateur. My pre-match ritual was not meant to be offensive to anyone. The Rangers fans were furious after the failure of their team and wreaked their anger on me.

Do you treat the Champions League as a runway?

- Not quite. If someone was to notice me, I am sure they already did. To tell you the truth I am not thinking about moving out from Glasgow. I’m good here.

Not even Arsenal could tempt you? The British newspapers already wrote about their interest in you a year ago.

- I do not read the British newspapers. I only go through the headlines.

Don’t try to tell me that you are not interested with the notes journalists give you.

- Of course I’m not. Anyway neither the people from Arsenal nor the ones from another clubs will be interested in them. They will be interested in me playing a game.

As soon as the game against Belgium?

- I don’t even know if I am going to play.

This is the "good one":A.B "I always attend a Holy Mass if only I do not have to play a game on Sunday"

ARTUR, there is always "Sunday" Mass on Saturday Eve. (Sunday Vigil) if you can't attend on Sunday.
Making statments like above ,you making football your priority and god no.1 and remember the FIRST Commandment "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"
Please do not make so shallow statements coz it is rather sad......

Staniszewski (2007-03-01 04:40:45):
He practices his faith and you have a problem with that? Just because you read a single line doesn't mean you know what his priorities are. I have amazing respect for Artur who takes time from his life to help others and practice his religion. Surely there is nothing sad about that.

Conor Graham (2008-01-06 03:34:05):
I dont see the issue with AB practicing his religion openly! Is it just because he plays for a predominently catholic team u think he blesses himself for other reasons?

Congratulatons on signing a new contract! may you and Celtic hav many more years of success together!
